Your instructor will pick you up from a location of your choice. Your first lesson will always take place in a quiet, safe area - progression of your driving skills will depend on your own ability. Your lessons will cover the mastering of driving skills, starting with controlling the steering wheel and working through to manoeuvres and driving at speed.
During your lessons, you will also cover the driving theory and mechanical knowledge needed for the 'show me/tell me' part of your practical test.
Your instructor will give feedback to you throughout the lesson and will review your progress at the end of each lesson. They will use this opportunity to answer any of your questions and deal with any concerns you may have
PASS PLUS
When you have passed your driving test, you have the option to take part in the 'Pass Plus' scheme. You will have a minimum of six -lessons covering the following topics:
• Town Driving
• Country driving
• All-weather driving
• Night driving
• Dual carriageways
• Motorway driving
The aim of the lessons is to help you further improve your driving skills and give you greater confidence and awareness driving on today's busy roads.
The Pass Plus scheme was introduced by the Driving Standards Agency in connection with most of the UK's leading insurance companies.
PRACTICAL DRIVING TEST
You will arrive at the test centre with your instructor, ten minutes before your test is due to begin.
The examiner will call your name and you will sign a declaration form and will then be led outside to have your eyesight tested by being asked to read a number plate at a distance of 20 metres. You will then be asked two questions that deal with the maintenance of your car. This section is called "show me/tell me and will have been covered by your instructor as part of your lessons.
Once this section is completed your drive will begin. This will take place in the car in which you have had your lessons.
The whole test lasts approximately 40 minutes and will involve two of the four possible manoeuvres, (turn in the road; bay park; reverse round a corner; parallel park) and will follow routes that are designed to be as uniform as possible, covering a range of typical road and traffic conditions.
You can make up to 15 minor faults and still pass your test. However, one serious or dangerous fault will result in an immediate fail.
At the end of your test your test when you return to the test centre, your examiner will give you the good news.
